While I was an active child I wasn't into any sports, though I did start horseback riding around the age of 12 and have never stopped doing that. It is actually quite physical and at times it can give me a harder workout than any in the gym.
I became a "gym junkie" in high school and went to the gym five days a week throughout high school and university but didn't know until later on that I wasn't doing much effectively until I met my husband five years ago. He won the Canadian Championships in 2003 and was/is a personal trainer. He showed me what to do and where to read about more effective technique, workouts, and, most importantly, nutrition.
I read and absorbed all the best information out there hungrily – I love everything about fitness and nutrition. I realized quickly that I wanted to be somebody who can help people out with both fitness and nutrition. So many people out there are just like I was – putting in so much effort but just not doing the right things and getting very little results. Nutrition and exercise is really not all that complicated, but with all the wrong messages out there in the media, it makes it seem complicated. I give people the tools to get the best results possible, the healthy way for long term results. I love my job!
I first decided to compete in fitness modeling in 2005 where I didn't even make the top 10. But that didn't make me want to give up. It made me want to work harder and try again. I did a figure competition in the spring of 2006 and placed 2nd at level 1 and then moved up to level 2 in the fall of 2006 where I didn't place. I realized I needed more time in the gym to move up so I took over a year off.
I competed again on Nov 1, 2008, in both figure and the SAF Figure Model competition. In figure I placed 3rd out of 15 girls in figure, which I was happy with since it was a very competitive group. In the SAF I placed 2nd out of 17 girls in the Figure Model and was very happy with that – I was now a SAF Elite fitness model.
My next competition is Nov 7, 2009, where I will be doing both figure, level 2 this time, as well as the SAF Ottawa Elite Challenge. I like the SAF competitions as it gives girls a more comfortable place to compete if they don't feel they are ready for figure, or want a more fun type of competition without the set poses. It gives women motivation to work towards something.
